FUEGO WIN STREAK REACHES 22 STRAIGHT GAMES
THE VICTORY OVER MVP SETS A NEW MARK FOR CONSECUTIVE WINS
July 16, 2008
LAGUNA HILLS – FINAL: En Fuego 20, MVP Sports Center 16
En Fuego, who six days earlier set a new
team record for consecutive wins with twenty straight by beating
the Sofa Kings 22-18, would extend the win streak to twenty-two
straight to set a new club record. En Fuego continued their
winning ways during the summer by beating MVP Sports Center in
the Wednesday night league at Laguna Hills 20-16 to make it
twenty-two in a row. En Fuego scored early and often and led
12-3 heading into the bottom of the third inning. MVP rallied
back scoring six runs to come within three 12-9 after three
innings. The game remained close the rest of the way with En
Fuego holding on to slim margins 16-14 after five innings and
17-16 after six innings. En Fuego put up three insurance runs in
the top of the seventh inning to lead 20-16 and MVP couldn’t
manage a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning as En
Fuego held on to win.
Right Fielder Kevin Lorton went 3-for-4 in
the game and scored three runs including his thirty-fifth run of
the season in the second inning which set a new single season
mark. Lorton had held the old record with others with
thirty-four runs scored. Left Fielder James Verdi went 3-for-3
with a walk and a sacrifice fly and had a team high four RBI.
Shortstop Corrie Willkie went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs
including his 800th career RBI with En Fuego. First Baseman
Justin Shultz went 2-for-5 and drove in three runs while scoring
three times.
The win streak is impressive for any team.
To win the majority of the games against the tough competition
in the Laguna Hills Thursday night league means a lot to En
Fuego. “The competition is what motivates us.” Said En Fuego
outfielder Vince Petruzzi
Notes: En Fuego has had many win streaks
over the course of their thirteen years…from May 14, 2008 to
July 16, 2008 the 22 straight wins is the longest streak in team
history…In 2001 they won 19 straight from June 21 to August 20
and won 24 of 25 overall in one stretch that year…After 1998, a
year in which they struggled, they took the Spring season of
1999 off only to come back in the Summer of 1999 to win their
first sixteen games for their third longest win streak…In 1999
En Fuego won eleven straight games and 20 of 21…In 2007 they won
11 straight to tie the fourth longest streak in team history and
won 14 of 15 games during that time…They have three 10 game
winning streaks as well accomplished in the following years
2001, 2005, and 2007…The En Fuego longest losing streak is six
games from January 23, 2003 to February 8, 2003…They snapped
their longest losing streak in team history in grand fashion
pummeling Dough Pro 37-8 in the Thursday night league at Laguna
Hills on February 20, 2003.
