EN FUEGO WINS 25TH CHAMPIONSHIP

THEY WIN THEIR 13TH TITLE AT LADERA RANCH

December 8, 2009

LADERA RANCH FIELDS – FINAL: En Fuego 18, TBS 3

En Fuego (11-1) won their 25th championship overall and 13th at Ladera Ranch defeating TBS 18-3 in the championship final. They have had an amazing run in the Ladera Ranch league since the park’s inaugural season in 2001 winning ten championships. This season En Fuego continued its dominance over opponents there.

En Fuego finished the regular season (9-1) as the first seed going into the playoffs where they would play Dirtbags a team that En Fuego normally handles.  The Dirtbags kept it close early until En Fuego scored eleven runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a commanding 19-7 lead. Outfielder James Verdi along with pitcher Craig Watkins led the way for En Fuego on offense. Verdi went 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs. Watkins also went 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs. Catcher Greg Reynolds added three hits and drove in a team high four runs in the game. En Fuego tacked on a few more runs for the 27-14 win and a berth into the title game. Chris Jones went 3-for-4 and scored four runs for En Fuego.

It was the thirteenth championship game appearance in fifteen seasons for En Fuego at Ladera Ranch where they have piled up the victories season after season. Overall En Fuego has played 183 games in Ladera Ranch leagues since 2001. In that span they are an astonishing (150-32-1 .822).

OF Kevin Lorton hit .769 to win the batting title and team MVP award.

In the championship final En Fuego would face off with TBS the only team to beat them during the regular season. Earlier in the year TBS rallied to beat En Fuego 27-19 to hand En Fuego their only loss of the season. The rematch would be a different story. En Fuego got back to what they do best and that is pitch well and play solid defense to go with timely hitting. After three innings the game remained close with En Fuego holding a slight edge 6-2. In the bottom of the fourth En Fuego pulled away scoring nine runs to take a 15-2 lead. TBS young and talented offense had been cooled off, as they were only able to score three runs in five innings. En Fuego scored three more times in the bottom of the fifth for the championship mercy win 18-3 and the clubs 25th championship overall. Infielder Jason Mooneyham went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run and drove in a team high four runs in the championship game. Outfielder Jon Petke went 2-for-3 with a double and added three RBI and outfielder Jason Martnick went a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk while scoring four times in the victory.
