In
the fourth game of the day at the PSTS tournament at the Big League
Dreams fields in Cathedral City, En Fuego fell short in their quest
to win their 9th tournament title in team history losing to league
rival Stac Pac 9-7. The loss was disappointing to an En Fuego team
who had lofty expectations for the tourney.
On
a high note Kevin Lorton played in
his 500th career game with En Fuego. “It is a good feeling knowing
all these years we have virtually had the success we have had with
the same group of guys, game in and game out.” Said En Fuego
Manager Craig Watkins. Lorton became
the fifth player to reach 500 games played with the team and he is
one of seven original members who started with the team in 1995.
On
the day, En Fuego, lacking their usual strong offensive attack,
finished (2-2) and in 3rd place overall. Their other loss was also
to the tourney champs, Stac Pac, by a 4-3 score. “We were a little
flat offensively against them today.” Said En Fuego Manager Craig
Watkins. Although En Fuego’s offense failed to get on track,
Lorton went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored in defeat. “It
wasn’t as though we were man handled out there. We more or less
beat ourselves today.” Said Watkins
Notes:
Before the two losses to Stac Pac, En Fuego had beaten Stac Pac four
consecutive times equaling their previous best winning streak
against them…In four games En Fuego pitcher Craig Watkins did not
allow more than nine runs in any game…The team average for runs
allowed per game was 6.5, a new team record for one
tournament…Another En Fuego player reached a milestone when Greg
Reynolds singled in the first game of the tournament for his 900th
career hit...Outfielder Wade Jackson
led the way for En Fuego offensively batting .714 with eight RBI and
seven runs with one home run in four games.
