When
En Fuego took the field against Evil Empire during its fourth
game of the NSA So. Cal. State tournament at the San Clemente
Sports Complex it was a historic moment for En Fuego
outfielder Vince Petruzzi.
He was playing in his 500th career game for the En
Fuego franchise.
He is the second En Fuego player to reach that
milestone with pitcher Craig
Watkins playing in his 500th game earlier this year.
In the very next game against Castaways he also reached
another milestone, collecting his 500th RBI.
Petruzzi
is one of the founding players of the En Fuego franchise and
has been one of its cornerstone pieces over the last 10 years.
His gold glove play, timely hitting, and speed on the
base paths have made him a consistent player for the team.
At one time he had the team lead in games played until
he took off close to two full seasons in late 2002.
Although
Petruzzi did not have one of his better tournament batting
averages, he did end up tied for second on the team with eight
RBI for the tournament.
He also showed his usual great play in the outfield
making a spectacular over the shoulder catch against Team
Nova.
His veteran leadership helped lead En Fuego to a second
place finish in the tournament.
En
Fuego finished runner-up with a 4-2 record.
The team won its first round game of the one day
tournament, but lost its second game after a nearly three hour
break.
They were able to battle their way back in the losers
bracket with three straight wins setting up a must win game
versus Matco/Doughpro.
En Fuego lost a low scoring game 2-5 eliminating the
possibility of facing Matco/Doughpro one more time for the
championship.
