En Fuego continued their great success in tournament play on the
year by winning the 2009 SCMAF Tournament of Champions in Palm
Springs. They would sweep the field going 4-0 en route to
becoming the only team to win three SCMAF T.O.C. championships.
It was En Fuego’s third tournament title in five tries in 2009.
They also won the SCMAF Orange County Divisional in May in San
Clemente.
In the first game of the day En Fuego had what would be their
toughest test in Yer Out from Ventura County. En Fuego got off
to a slow start offensively but as usual their steady pitching
and solid defense kept things close. Trailing 8-5 after five
innings of play En Fuego scored three runs in the top of the
fifth to tie the game at eight apiece. Yer Out scored one run to
take a slim lead heading into the top of the seventh. En Fuego
rallied in their last at bat to score four times to take a three
run lead. Yer Out was unable to muster anything in the bottom
half of the seventh and En Fuego started the day with a come
from behind victory. After scoring four runs in the first inning
Yer Out was held to just five runs over the next six innings
combined. The veteran En Fuego squad remained poised and got the
timely hits they needed as they normally do when they are on
their game.
Tournament MVP third baseman Corrie
Willkie of En Fuego went 3-for-3 with a walk, three doubles
and scored two runs. Jason Mooneyham went 2-for-2 with a home
run and two runs scored. Mooneyham was named to the
all-tournament team. Outfielder James
Verdi went 2-for-4 in the game and scored three runs to
contribute to the opening round win for En Fuego.

Tournament MVP Corrie
Willkie was one hit away from a perfect tournament
(13-for-14). |
In the second game En Fuego faced off with Hinson Tires
also from Ventura County. In another close game En Fuego
and Hinson Tires were tied 5-5 after the fourth inning.
It was in the top of the fifth when En Fuego exploded
for nine runs to take a commanding 14-5 lead. Outfielder
Jason Martnick ignited the rally with an opposite field
home run at Fenway Park that inspired his teammates.
Martnick went 3-for-5 and added a double with five RBI
and scored two runs to help lead En Fuego. Mooneyham
connected on one of his team leading five home runs in
the inning, a shot that cleared the entire stadium.
Mooneyham batted .643 and drove in nine runs while
scoring nine runs for En Fuego in the T.O.C. En Fuego
would hold off Hinson Tires the last three innings as
they added five runs in each of the sixth and seventh
innings to make it 24-10 heading into the bottom of the
seventh putting the game out of reach. The 24-12 win
placed En Fuego in the semi-final undefeated game versus
Howarth Construction. Justin Shultz went 3-for-4 with
two RBI and three runs in the game. Willkie continued
his hot hitting going 4-for-4 with two RBI and three
runs to again lead En Fuego.
Game three versus Howarth Construction was no different
than En Fuego’s first two games. A close match-up to
start off then En Fuego would pull away in the end for
the victory. En Fuego lead by a slim two run margin 7-5
after five innings. It was another late surge by the En
Fuego offense that again helped win another ballgame. In
the top of the sixth and seventh innings En Fuego
rallied for six runs each to put the game out of reach.
The final score was 19-9 but like the previous two
match-ups the games were much closer than the final
score indicated. Willkie once again went 4-for-4 and
added a triple and a home run with three RBI and two
runs. Also contributing to the win was catcher Chris
Jones and pitcher Craig
Watkins. Jones went 3-for-4 with a home run and
three RBI. Watkins who had pulled a hamstring in the
Hinson Tire game played through it and went 4-for-4 with
three RBI to help lead En Fuego to the championship
game. Shortstop Cesar Reyes
also added three RBI in the win. |

Day two of the T.O.C. had En Fuego sitting in the driver’s seat
as the only undefeated team left. In the championship game it
would be a rematch between En Fuego and Howarth who rallied back
through the losers bracket. Typical of the way the tourney had
gone En Fuego would be in another tight game early, tied after
three innings 8-8. They would rally to score three runs in the
bottom of the fourth and never relinquished the lead. They added
three more runs while holding Howarth scoreless the final four
innings for the 14-8 win and the 2009 SCMAF “D” Division
Championship. Leadoff man Kevin
Lorton went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs. Outfielders
Jerry Langner and
Vince Petruzzi who were both
named to the all-tourney team helped the team to victory in the
championship game. Langner went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Petruzzi
went 2-for-2 with a walk and scored three runs. All-tourney
selection Ryan Johnson also went 3-for-3 with a triple and an
RBI in the game.

|

Rya n Johnson was
an all-tournament selection hitting .600 over the two
days. |
Overall it was another example of a great team win for
En Fuego. Each player on the team contributed in some
way. With great defense by the entire team behind him,
Watkins held opponents to an average of 9.5 runs a game.
With clutch hitting in key situations by the entire En
Fuego offense they were able to rally to victory in
close games. Willkie went 13-for-14 batting .929 for the
tournament slightly edging out teammate Jason Mooneyham
for tournament MVP. Mooneyham batted .643, second on the
team to Willkie while providing big hits including five
home runs and nine RBI. Johnson (.600), Langner (.556)
and Petruzzi (.583) each played well on both offense and
defense to earn all-tournament selections.
Notes: En Fuego would become the first ever SCMAF team
to win three T.O.C. championships…They were back-to-back
champions in 2003-2004…In 2003 they defeated league foe
Penetrators for their first title and in 2004 they beat
Gas House Gorillas from Glendale…It was their fourth
appearance in the title game in eight years…they lost to
Bye-You in the 2002 T.O.C…Since the inception of the
SCMAF T.O.C. in Palm Springs in 1997 En Fuego has had
many good showings…In eleven T.O.C. tourneys they have
three championships and one runner-up along with a third
place finish in 2005 and a fourth place finish in
1997…Overall their record is 27-17 .614 in the eleven
T.O.C. tourneys they have played in…Corrie Willkie won
his sixth tournament MVP with En Fuego the most in team
history…Vince Petruzzi was selected to his thirteenth
all-tournament team with En Fuego also an En Fuego team
record…In five tournaments in 2009 En Fuego went 19-4
.826 in 23 games…they went undefeated in three tourneys
en route to their 14th, 15th and 16th tournament
championships…they finished third in a fourteen team
field ASA Bang-for-Bucks qualifier as well…As always En
Fuego had much success as well as fun in the
desert…there was no shortage of fun this year
either…from the ball field to their staple night at Las
Casuelas Mexican restaurant then to the Village Pub for
some late night shenanigans…the 2009 SCMAF T.O.C.
