BACK- TO-BACK SCMAF OC SPRING DIVISIONAL CHAMPS!

EN FUEGO CRUISES TO ANOTHER TOURNAMENT WIN

May 30, 2009

STEED MEMORIAL PARK, SAN CLEMENTE – CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL: En Fuego 16, Shake N Bake 7

In the nine-team field at the 2nd annual SCMAF Orange County Spring Divisional Tournament held at Steed Memorial Park in San Clemente En Fuego (4-0) did what they needed to do to win the title for the second straight year. It wasn’t an overly dominating performance for En Fuego but it seldom is. They just keep finding a way to win ball games. The team is on a bit of a roll right now making it seventeen consecutive wins all together after sweeping the tournament going 4-0 on the day.

In pool play En Fuego had two easy victories. First they took down Suicide Kings 13-2 and then they beat Poison 12-3. All-Tournament second baseman Mike Kerr set the tone for En Fuego on defense. He made a diving grab off a hot shot in the first inning of the first game versus Suicide Kings for the first out of the tournament. Kerr let it be known to his teammates that he was all business. They took notice and followed suit. Kerr also batted .688 on the day and drove in seven runs and scored seven runs.

Tournament MVP Corrie Willkie batted .733 and played great defense at first base for En Fuego. As usual Willkie stood out on both offense and defense. “He quietly leads the way. He is the heart in the order we can all depend on.” Said En Fuego Coach Craig Watkins

In the semi-final game En Fuego faced off with Fat City. En Fuego trailed after four innings 3-2. They scored four runs in the top of the fifth when they collected six straight hits to take a 6-3 lead. They held on for a 6-4 victory to advance to the title game.

The En Fuego defense continued to support the pitching of Craig Watkins. Over the first three games En Fuego allowed only two, three, and four runs. In the championship game En Fuego faced Shake N Bake.  The sluggish En Fuego offense got off to a good start by scoring five runs in the first inning. They would not look back en route to a 16-7 victory and their second consecutive SCMAF Spring Divisional Championship.

All-Tournament outfielder Kevin Lorton went 5-for-5 to lead the way in the final game. He batted .706 on the day and scored a team high 10 runs. Vince Petruzzi was selected to the all-tournament team with a .667 batting average and played solid defense in centerfield all day.

On the day En Fuego allowed only sixteen runs in four games with solid pitching and good defense. They did what they seem to do best which is to find a way to win games. The team seems to adapt to the level of play of their opponent. “When we need to hit we can usually hit. If we need to play good defense in a low scoring game we can do that to.” Said Watkins “We seem to be able to find a way to win more often than not.”

MVP Corrie Willkie led the team hitting .733 for the tournament.

Notes: The tournament win was the 15th overall in team history for En Fuego and the second in 2009 in as many tournaments…Since the beginning of 2007 En Fuego has six titles, two runner-ups, and one third place finish in the 11 tournaments they have entered (39-9 .813)…it was the sixth tournament En Fuego has played at the San Clemente Sports Complex, all since 2005…unlike last year in which En Fuego faced familiar foe all four teams played this year were the first meeting for En Fuego…Corrie Willkie was tournament MVP for the fifth time in his career most in team history and Vince Petruzzi was an all-tournament selection for the 12th time in his career most in team history.
