LAGUNA HILLS – FINAL: En Fuego 21, Dead End 19

Seven of the twelve batters in the En Fuego lineup collected three or more hits en route to a 21-19 victory over Dead End in the 2005 Spring Thursday Night Championship game at Laguna Hills.  Overall En Fuego banged out thirty hits led by Wade Jackson and Ryan Sauers who each had four hits.

En Fuego controlled the game from the third inning on and led by as many as twelve runs after the sixth inning, 21-9.  They held off a late rally by Dead End as well as the weather, rain started to come down in the last inning, to win their first Thursday night championship since the spring 2003 league when they knocked off Dead End who called themselves the Sofa Kings at the time.  Despite the downpour in the last inning En Fuego was able to hold on for its eleventh league championship in team history.

To get to the championship game En Fuego needed to get over a big hurdle.  Spring Training, who En Fuego had struggled with in recent games stood in the way of En Fuego’s first championship appearance in six leagues.  En Fuego played a flawless game and edged Spring Training, 16-14.  This win came after ending the regular season with a 13-9 win over Spring Training to clinch being the home team in the first round of the playoffs.

Wade Jackson, the team’s MVP and Triple Crown winner this season, led the way blasting two home runs while driving in six against Spring Training.  “There were certainly guys who stepped up but it’s a team game and one guy is only as good as the team.”  Said Coach Craig Watkins “Everyone contributed one way or another, it’s the only way you can win as a team.”  “It was a great team win, I love these guys.”

En Fuego finished the season (9-3) winning seven straight games in route to the Thursday night league title.  Afterwards the majority of the team gathered at Patsy’s Irish Pub in Mission Viejo to celebrate.  “This is a great night for the team,” said outfielder James Verdi.  “I’m just glad to be a part of it all.”
