EN FUEGO WINS THE 2007 SPRING THURSDAY LAGUNA HILLS LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

IN A CLASSIC BATTLE THEY HOLD ON TO BEAT THE BULL DAWGS 31-28 TO WIN THEIR FOURTH TITLE IN THE LAST SEVEN SEASONS IN THE LAGUNA HILLS LEAGUE

April 5, 2007

LAGUNA HILLS – FINAL: En Fuego 31, Bull Dawgs 28

Vince Lombardi said “Winning isn’t everything - but wanting to win is.” En Fuego wanted to win and they did just that. En Fuego won the 2007 Spring Thursday Night Laguna Hills League Championship by out slugging the Bull Dawgs en route to scoring 31 runs. But it wasn’t easy. They held off a late rally and ended up winning an instant classic, 31-28.

Before the championship match-up with the Bull Dawgs, En Fuego needed to get by rival Spring Training in the first round playoff game. With a strong defensive effort lead by shortstop Cesar Reyes En Fuego was able to hold the Spring Training offense down allowing only three runs advancing with a 7-3 victory. The seven runs scored by En Fuego turned out to be enough for the win, but they would certainly need to find a way to generate more offense as they headed into the final game versus the Bull Dawgs. The Bull Dawgs and their explosive offense attack disposed of Blood, Sweat, & Beers in the other first round playoff game.

In the championship game En Fuego jumped out to a five run lead in the top half of the first inning lead by Wade Jackson’s three run home run. Jackson, the game’s MVP, was 5-for-5 with two home runs and eight RBI including some strong defensive play to lead En Fuego. The Bull Dawgs answered with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Although En Fuego led the entire game they had to continually hold off rallies by the Bull Dawgs. This was the trend throughout the game as the Bull Dawgs had to play catch-up throughout. En Fuego scored four runs in each of the next three innings including getting another deep blast by Jackson in the fourth to help En Fuego go up by ten runs. After 4 ½ innings of play En Fuego held their largest lead of the game at 17-7 but the Bull Dawg offense was just warming up. “Those guys are unbelievable hitters. They’re the best in the league.” En Fuego manager Craig Watkins said.

Team MVP Corrie Willkie hit .705 on the season to lead En Fuego.

In the bottom of the fourth the Bull Dawgs scored seven runs to get within three 17-14. In the top half of the fifth En Fuego again put four runs on the board to extend the lead to 21-14. After shutting out the Bull Dawgs in the bottom of the fifth, En Fuego scored one run in the top of the sixth to go ahead 22-14. Again the Bull Dawgs offense rallied to score seven times and pulled within one run 22-21 after six innings of play.

In the top of the seventh En Fuego proved they wanted to win.

After scoring a run to go up 23-21 with two outs and two on they got a walk from third baseman Jason England to load the bases. Leadoff hitter Kevin Lorton then singled to start a string of seven hits in row and eight more runs. “We wanted it more.” Said Lorton

The nine run inning put En Fuego up by ten again 31-21. In the bottom of the seventh inning En Fuego could smell victory after the Bull Dawgs went scoreless. In the eighth and final inning En Fuego failed to score for the first time of the night but heading into the bottom of the eighth they led comfortably by ten runs. The Bull Dawgs would rally in their final at bat scoring seven runs to come within three. With the tying run at the plate and two out En Fuego got the final out to clinch the victory. “It was another great team effort and win for En Fuego.” Said Watkins “This was a game where you don’t realize how good of a game it was until it’s over and you look back on it.” Added Watkins

A few of the many players contributing big for En Fuego were outfielder James Verdi who went 4-for-4 with four RBI and four runs and first baseman Ryan Sauers who went 3-for-5 with three RBI in the final game.

But collectively it was the best team that beat perhaps the best players. With solid all around play on defense and timely hitting when they needed it En Fuego became champions once again.
