CHAMPIONS AGAIN!

EN FUEGO HOLDS OFF A FIERCE JK INC. RALLY TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIP

March 26, 2009

LAGUNA HILLS – FINAL: En Fuego 38, JK Inc. 21

For a brief moment it seemed as though nothing could stop En Fuego from winning the 2009 Spring Laguna Hills Thursday night league championship. That notion was short lived in the rematch of the previous season championship game between En Fuego and JK Inc. JK Inc. won that game 17-14 to take the Fall 2008 title. This time a determined En Fuego team would not be denied.

En Fuego came out with a fury to start the game. After three and a half innings they led a stunned JK Inc. squad 25-1. En Fuego poured it on led by Justin Shultz’s two-out home run in the first inning to give En Fuego an 8-0 lead. After holding JK Inc. to one run they added two runs in the top of the second to make it 10-1. Well aware that no lead was safe En Fuego did not allow a run in the bottom of the second and were poised to extend their lead in the top of the third inning. They added another seven runs behind Corrie Willkie and Jerry Langner who each hit home runs in the inning to stretch the En Fuego lead to 25-1.

There was some frustration on the part of the JK Inc. players, but that did not deter them from a fierce rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. They put themselves right back in what might have seemed to be a blowout game scoring twenty runs in the inning to close the gap quickly. “We knew it was early and we know what they can do.” Said En Fuego Manager Craig Watkins “We new we just needed to keep hitting.”

After four innings and the score 25-21 with En Fuego hanging onto a slim margin the game was measuring up to the hype. “You couldn’t have asked for anything better. This was an epic battle,” Said Watkins “One for all time.” Each time En Fuego and JK Inc. had faced off in previous meetings the games were intense, but this championship showdown had shaped up into a classic.

When the game did not go as planned for JK Inc. tensions grew and words were exchanged between some JK Inc. players and the umpire as things didn’t go their way. This raised the level of intensity even more as JK Inc. players and En Fuego players began to exchange words. The umpire quickly put an end to that warning both team’s managers that any further outbursts will not be tolerated.

En Fuego went on to score two more runs in the top of the fifth to lead 27-21.  They would hold JK Inc. scoreless in the bottom of the fifth. Hanging onto their slim lead En Fuego would put up another big rally in the top of the sixth inning. In what became a close ballgame En Fuego would put an exclamation on their championship victory. They banged out eleven hits in the inning while scoring eleven runs to extend their lead to 38-21.

Co-MVP OF Kevin Lorton hit .657 on the season for En Fuego.

Before the start of the bottom of the sixth inning the umpire ejected a player from JK Inc. for a verbal exchange with an En Fuego player and his continued arguing of rules with the umpire. This would come back to hurt JK Inc. Now up by eighteen runs and in position to win the game by mercy rule if they maintain at least a fifteen run lead after five innings of play, En Fuego would need only three outs to end the game in the bottom of the sixth.

After recording two outs and not allowing any runs En Fuego outfielder James Verdi made his team aware that the player from JK Inc. who was ejected was due up. With a runner on first base En Fuego pitcher Craig Watkins intentionally walked the next JK Inc. batter. The very next hitter in the order was the ejected player and by rule he would be an automatic out his next time at bat if there was not another player to substitute into the game for him. This was the third out of the inning and ended the game as En Fuego put JK Inc. away with a 38-21 mercy final to win their twenty-third championship.

Player of the game Justin Shultz was one of the many hitting stars for En Fuego going 4-for-4 with a team high eight RBI. Kevin Lorton and Corrie Willkie each had five hits. James Verdi and Ryan Johnson each had four hits. Along with Verdi and Willkie, Mike Kerr and Jerry Langner all drove in four runs in the win.

After losing four consecutive championship games in the highly competitive Thursday night Laguna Hills league En Fuego once again became champions reclaiming the Thursday night league crown in typical En Fuego fashion.

In the first round playoff game En Fuego easily disposed of Nunya 17-7 to advance to the championship. Mike Lorton and Craig Watkins drove in three runs each to lead the way on offense. Watkins and the En Fuego defense held Nunya’s powerful offense to only seven runs in eight innings.

Co-MVP Corrie Willkie hit .667 on the season for En Fuego.
