IN 900TH GAME THEY BEAT STAC PAC AND CONTINUE TO DOMINATE AT LADERA RANCH

April 28, 2009

LADERA RANCH FIELDS – FINAL: En Fuego 34, Stac Pac 9

It was all business for James Verdi and En Fuego when the playoffs in the Tuesday night league started. Verdi rallied the team to their 24th league championship overall. “I noticed James was trying to fire up the guys,” said Coach Craig Watkins “He got them going and the team seemed to get pumped up from his enthusiasm!” En Fuego came out firing on all cylinders against Running Men in the first round playoff game. They scored fourteen runs in the first three innings to jump out to an early 14-4 lead heading into the fourth inning.

Justin Shultz pitched his way to victory holding Running Men to only six runs in five innings. En Fuego would get the 21-6 mercy win on a walk off home run by Jon Petke in the bottom of the fifth. Jason Martnick led the way on offense going 4-for-4 and scoring four runs. Verdi drove in a team high seven runs for En Fuego. Ryan Johnson added four RBI and had three hits in the game.

In the championship final En Fuego would once again face off with rival Stac Pac. It was the 85th meeting between the two teams overall. En Fuego has played Stac Pac and Spring Training eighty-five times each. En Fuego holds a slight edge over Stac Pac with a (45-38-2) record. Against Spring Training En Fuego leads the series (47-38). Overall for the En Fuego franchise it was their 900th game. En Fuego would make this milestone championship game a memorable one. En Fuego gave up five runs to Stac Pac in the top of the first inning but answered in a big way. They collected fifteen hits and scored eighteen runs in the bottom of the first inning to lead 18-5. They held a stunned Stac Pac squad scoreless in the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the second En Fuego took total control scoring thirteen runs on nine hits to lead 31-5 after two innings. They would run away with it winning 34-9. It was the third straight win against Stac Pac in championship meetings and four out of the last five.

There were many offensive stars for En Fuego. Ryan Johnson and Jon Petke each had four hits to lead the team. Martnick drove in a team high six runs. Greg Reynolds drove in five runs. Chris Jones, Petke, and Johnson each had four RBI.
