EN FUEGO DOMINATES THE COMPETITION EN ROUTE TO CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY

August 23, 2001

LADERA RANCH FIELDS – FINAL: En Fuego 25, Behind the Stein 8

En Fuego (14-1) took care of business often and early in the championship game as they defeated an overmatched Behind the Stein team 25-8 for the 2001 Summer Thursday night league championship. En Fuego led 20-2 after three innings and were never challenged. Offensive leaders for En Fuego included outfielder Mike Lorton, shortstop Brett Nista, and outfielder Wade Jackson who each homered in the game. The team’s MVP, Nista drove in four runs while going 4-for-4. Jackson drove in five runs while going 4-for-4 as well. Lorton went 3-for-3 and added four RBI.

In the first round playoff game En Fuego handled the Usual Suspects as they fell behind early and eventually stormed to a 19-9 lead in the fifth inning. En Fuego held off a late rally en route to a 21-16 victory. The Lorton brothers, Mike and Kevin belted home runs in this game. First baseman Derek Gingerich went 3-for-3 with a walk and scored three times. Although En Fuego’s potent offensive attack appeared to lead the way to the title win it was their pitching and solid defense that added to the dominating performances in the playoff games and all season long.

It was a record-breaking season for En Fuego. Both individual and team records were set over the course of the 15 game league season. New team records include games played with 15 and 14 wins in a single season. Overall as a team En Fuego scored 308 runs on the season and collected 373 hits both new team records.

Nista, Mike Lorton, and catcher Ryan Sauers each played in all of the 15 games during the season, a new individual record. Nista had perhaps the best season by any En Fuego player ever. He set or tied six single season team records including hits with 42, 14 doubles, 34 runs, and 47 RBI.

Notes: Wade Jackson won the batting title with a .694 average…Nista’s nine home runs left him one short of tying the single season team record held by Jackson and Jason Santoro…En Fuego felt confident going into the title game versus Behind the Stein as they had already defeated them four previous times during the season…The 14 wins during one season is a new team record for En Fuego…and they ended the season with 13 consecutive wins.
